After an intensive search, her body was located the following day in a drainage ditch next to a farm road approximately three miles from where Brittany was last seen alive. Physical evidence from both the abduction site and the body recovery site was sent to the SBI Laboratory for processing. One focus of the investigation was the description of the vehicle driven by the suspect. Hoke County Kindergartner Found Dead, Search...

 WRAL Posted 11:00 p.m. Jan 7, 1998 — Updated 11:00 p.m. Jan 7, 1998 RAEFORD — After a grueling search through the muddyterrain of a Hoke County wooded area, authorities discovered the body of5-year-old Brittany Lynn Locklear Thursday afternoon. Sheriff Wayne Byrd said that the body was found in a drainagepipe, only miles away from the spot where the kindergartner waskidnapped Wednesday morning. Brittany Lynn Locklear disappeared about 7 a.m. from her home justsouthwest of Raeford while waiting for the school bus. The Hoke CountySheriff's Department says that the girl was snatched by a man and put intoa brown pickup truck with a rack of overhead lights. Brittany's mother, Connie Chavis, said she had been watching herdaughter from inside her home as the child waited at a bus stop about200 yards away. Just after 7 a.m., Chavis said she went to the bathroom.When she returned, Brittany was gone. The disappearance has other parents very concerned for the welfare oftheir own children

Officials say DNA evidence links killer to murdered girl.

Greensboro News & Record Jan 25, 1998 Updated Jan 23, 2015 Investigators say they have enough DNA evidence to link the killer of 5-year-old Brittany Lynn Locklear to the crime if they can find the right suspect. Hoke County Sheriff Wayne Byrd said the State Bureau of Investigation has found enough forensic evidence to generate a profile of the killer's DNA.He would not say what type of evidence was collected. ``Once we get a DNA report where we know we can get a match, there are some people we will request blood and hair samples from,' Byrd said. ``Anyone who refuses will jump to the top of my suspect list, and we'll get a court order to get them to do it.' Byrd said immediate family members went to the bottom of his list after they volunteered for polygraph tests and submitted hair and blood samples last week.
